If they know that you're going to a competitor, they're likely to walk you out the front door
Don't give notice until you've been given clearance from the new employer. Also, they usually just ask when your last day is so it's just courtesy to give two weeks

If I'm shopping offers, what is the ethical thing to say? Like that it's undetermined but I could possibly be working for a competitor.
It depends if you've already decided that you're leaving. They will likely find out at some point. If they ask you when you present your notice, be honest. You don't want to burn a bridge that you may be crossing back over later. With so many mergers going on, especially at the mid-tier level, you may be back working with the same group later on down the road
Fuck! I verbally accepted an offer, but i honestly forgot to check to see if this company was in talks to maybe be bought out. It is a small company private wealth management. Now i am wondering if i should back out of it.
^ A small pwm firm that has rumors of being bought out/has you worried is a bad sign
Lol.. no... not what i said. I said i did NOT check before to see IF that company was in talks to be bought out. After researching a bit, i have found nothing except for the fact that it is a company that is growing every year. On glassdoor i only found 1 bad review on the company. Now that i have done research I am sure I am ok. I will reach out to the company and see if that is anywhere in the horizon.

If you are going to a competitor, they will just send you home. If it's a current/potential client, they will treat you like royalty and let you hang around.
