I refuse to attend any meetings unless it pertains to my current project. If someone wants a status update on my projects I can send them an email. I swear all these stupid leadership classes and courses want people to have 20 meetings a week are just a waste of time. How is anyone getting any actual work done? It’s counter productive. Who wrote this into the play book? I want to know who is responsible for this nonsense. Then yall wonder why yall can’t get a job. If your jobs is being in meetings all day what do you actually do for work?! Talk?! 🤣😂 ok I’m done with my rant on meetings.
Honestly there aren’t many meetings scheduled past 4:30 so far. However work time generally exceeds 5 pm.
This is why you will be career limited. If your company is paying you, and there is the occasional after hour need? Do it! This is what the managers and directors above you did. And they keep notes. You can’t complain about your salary and also complain about being asked to give a little extra.
See this is where you and I think very differently from each other. I’m actually specifically choosing to limit my career because it allows me to excel in life especially with my family. I’m also not saying I wouldn’t go to a meeting that for some reason had to happen after 4:30, but 99% of meetings don’t need to happen then and it’s just that I work different hours than the coworker that scheduled it so they can move it forward just fine.
Following up- this attitude frustrates me! People complain about not getting anywhere- but then they say “I won’t work past 4:30”. What do you expect? As a lead project engineer, we did what it took! We had suppliers all over the world. We had calls at all hours. I got sent to China on less than a week’s notice. My family understood. We friggin won! Our new product exceeded sales forecast by 4x. The job satisfaction was huge. The reward for delivering was decent.
Limiting your potential to 8 to 4:30 is holding you back. Don’t complain about it later
Absolutely. Many of today's employees are far from the team players of yesteryear. Already have so many new DEI challenges and now these types are more and more common.
Gag me
I haven’t had any push past 4:30pm luckily, our company is pretty good about getting them out of the way earlier so we can be left alone to get work cranked out the rest of the day. I’d like to think I’d make a pretty hard boundary if needed as well.

We have some projects in different time zones so it’s almost impossible to not have a meeting run past 5PM. I try to flex those hours but at the same time I have so much to do so it’s pretty hard to take time off elsewhere if I run late on other days.
I’m sorry to hear that. That sounds like a tough work environment

I'm the same as the OP. Also I won't do anything earlier than 8:30 if I can help it

I have cut-offs early and late. It's not always achievable but try to keep meetings between 9 - 4.
I like those boundaries. Try to do similar myself
I do have cut offs both at the start of the day or end of the day. For me to accept outside those times, there needs to be a good reason that would affect my career if I declined it.
That’s pretty similar to mine. If it’s a meeting with the big wigs I obviously have to go but otherwise no
It’s unheard of for that to happen at my company even when our satellite offices or clients are in a different US time zone. PMs always schedule things in a sweet spot for both parties.

It’s never been an issue, but I’d consider it if it came up frequently enough.

Depends on who called the meeting for me. If it is a person very senior to me I will attend as that is maybe the only time they have to discuss. Another scenario is when I’m working with someone in a drastically different time zone. I usually will work with them to where we both give and take on meeting times. One late meeting for me then them and repeat.
Honestly, I don't care when a meeting is as long as it's scheduled early enough. If it's after hours, I log in when I have to and take time away in lieu and always at home.
Other people are saying things like, "we got things done blah blah blah." You got paid a lot more if you compare it to the cost of living these days. Corporations are making record profits, but they are not reflected in our incomes. If we don't get the money, which is not really within our control, we can at least not be donating out time to them. *Rant over*
