Compensation transparency helps workers to be paid more fairly and discourages exploitation of workers who don’t know to ask for more. That’s why it’s highly discouraged by management.
I agree
100%. Pay transparency is super important
Agree
And the NLRA highly discourages making comments like the one your partner made so discuss away
That partner is so dumb for this exact reason
Yes, out of principle. I don’t “brag” about it, but discuss with anyone who asks. Openly. Because not discussing only serves the people at the very tippy top
I never discussed for eight years as they told me it was subject to termination and confidential.
We hired a lady close to retirement and one day overhearing all of us talk about our government reimbursements she asked us why we would receive those as only people making under 45k collect that. We all stared at her and said yeah girl lol
Well. We found out our most administrative clerk and her, a senior, were making much more. The rest of us were all making 40 something and we were all varied years of experience.
Since then we openly discuss and all of us are 90-120k which we didn't think possible at that time. Talk about salary whether with colleagues or recruiters. Get paid. This is your livelihood. Especially if you are a woman
You should ask your partner why it’s discouraged.
I tell whenever asked. It’s important to make sure you and your coworkers get paid their worth. The partner discourages it so that he or she can underpay as many people as possible.

I never share salary info but I think others should be encouraged to do so.
It’s illegal to prevent employees from sharing comp info in California.
Nationally too — unlawful to infringe on NLRA section 7 right to discuss terms and conditions of employment for mutual aid and protection
It’s awkward and uncomfortable to share but it’s the only way you and your fellow associates will get to even footing. Black box firms rely on associates not discussing and get away with paying people unfairly. I’ve been at both and got to say, I prefer working at a firm that pays class levels the same so this doesn’t happen.
Imagine my shock when I (licensed 7 years) found out my base was $5k more than the first years. Now it’s $15k more with much room for improvement still.
In Massachusetts, employers with 25 or more employees (full- or part-time) are required to provide comp info to current and potential employees. Existing employees can request a pay range for their current position, so there's total transparency.
Comp range is required to be in job postings in NY.
Our salaries are public. At a conference I mentioned what I made and some of my friends are now asking for raises.
No, but it happens often. I'd just never do it personally.
