Do you ever have days where you just can’t open the laptop, or weeks where you struggle to bill more than a few hours a day? I have plenty to do, but I just…can’t. Is this what burnout feels like?

That was the beginning of my burnout. It's a miracle I didn't get fired cuz I could not bring myself to do the work for almost a whole year. Ultimately I went on short term disability for a month, then lateraled and took time off. Take this seriously and reassess your boundaries & seek out options like vacation or leave or therapy. For me, quiet quitting for a year + around 3 months of no work + consistent therapy got me back to feeling motivated (excited, even) to work.

Same. Quiet quitted for a couple of months and got “quitted” lol

Did you get severance?

possibly burnout but also possibly undiagnosed adhd

Could be burnout/an undiagnosed mental health issue, or could be you just need a vacation. In any case, go ahead and book the latter ASAP and don’t be afraid to seek professional help for the former.

“Keep costs down”???? I am happy to keep costs down by not working on this ducking matter anymore. Considering a jump from Chicago to New York. I truly love living in Chicago and how far this salary gets me but I definitely want to try to make it in New York.

The only problem is my significant other has a lot of negative opinions about New York. I ultimately want to return to DC but I feel like a few good years in New York would be really good for me. In terms of a place to live, where in Manhattan can I find a place that's similar to River North in Chicago?

Why are lawyers less friendly as colleagues than non-lawyers? I’ve worked both in-house and in firms and noticed lawyers tend to ignore each other. Compared to the multiple corporate events and initiatives that was quite a choc when I realized people in BL just come to the office, sit down, work and leave without even trying to have a conversation.

Curious - would you consider a lateral move to a lower ranked firm if the practice group is higher ranked than at your current firm? In other words what’s more important - firm or practice group ranking?
