100%.
You will need to take a pay cut to get better WLB.
I took a 30% pay cut to go from strategy consulting (hellish hours and culture) to industry where I leave work at 5pm and don’t log back on in the evenings.
My growth trajectory is also markedly different. While my salary has gone up ~40% in 4 years, I would likely be making about double what I’m making now had I stayed in consulting.
Keep in mind, there is a certain salary threshold you reach that you don’t “need” more $$ and it certainly does not equal happiness. Depending on your location, that could be $100k, $200k, or $500k.
I am so happy with my decision as I am able to have 2 young kids that I get to see after work every day, hang out with on weekends without stressing about work, and go to all their school events, etc. without worrying about perception.
To me, that is 10x more valuable than the $$ I gave up. Plus, if you think about hourly rate, I probably make more now not being on call 24/7.
That’s quite obvious. You want to get paid more, you need to show the work for it
Generally there is a fear that you have to get ahead and the quickest way is to step on other people. If you get another job, you’ll make less. Miserable people tend to buy happiness and that usually means debt.
If you want freedom, think of what your life would be like without a mortgage, decent savings and a decent 401k. If work asks something unethical, you’ll can say no. Does this sound so bad even if you have to drive an old Honda?
This sounds like that quote from the movie the gambler. All positions of power come from the power of "F you"
Cutthroat or high performance? I’ve worked at multiple top tier firms and it never felt cutthroat in the sense your peers are going to throw you under the bus. But high performance and overachievers - for sure.
