Sometimes clients suggest copy and I’m like, “darn, that was good.” And they’re like, “you wrote that. It’s from our print ad.” But when I wrote it, it was no big thing. I might have even felt like a hack. Give it time and keep trucking. You’ll look back and maybe inspire yourself.
Moving through that mist right now as well. Genuine inspiration is the best propellant.
(You didn’t ask for a practical tip so ignore this if you’re not in the mood or headspace.)
When I’m on a completion-over-creativity project, I find adding *intrigue* to be a gratifying and rewarding way of defibrillating the pen. By that I mean, layering in a quest or play of some sort just for you. That way you’ll always be becoming a better writer, even if the assignments aren’t allowing you to showcase it.
Example:
I’ve written so many three-beat CTA lines, the format puts me to sleep at this point. (e.g. where writers thrive / we write here / writes of passage… 🤢)
And yet someone will still yell out “simplify” and “more conversational” like the “Free Bird” guy. Even if the line has already been stripped down to the bricks of the English language.
So I decided to deep dive into “simple” and “conversational.” Now I know all about lemmas and lexemes for Jeopardy. I also now have a bank of the 800 most commonly spoken words in the English across the world — thanks to the NGSL and major corporas freely available.
How many copywriters know or care about the frequency with which the words they choose are used, by whom, when and why? Now, I can legit say I take a “data-driven” approach to word selection.
I also find it helpful to look at English through the eyes of someone learning it for the first time via TOEFL and ESL materials. Also, an interesting way to get insight into the logics of the originating language.
This is such a good response. Love it for OP
Sometimes you gotta just think of it as "I'm doing my job and as long as it works for the client, I don't need to feel like I wrote a masterpiece". You can always channel your writer in other ways, outside of work.
Your writer's-block could b a combo of both deadline-pressure & "brain rot"...or ONE of the other...or NEITHER of the other, & instead something ELSE.
Whenever I get "writer's block"--which may last 2 weeks at MOST--I might try changing-up my writing routine by first going to a public library & looking over any books or magazines on writing-advice given by the pros.
Don't let your writer's-ego stop u from seeking-out a little help for answers that that r EVADING u at the moment.
I have sought-out MANY a source of writing-tips whenever I m either bored, distracted or writing aimlessly.
I have been pleasantly surprised sometimes, with how a suggested little twist here & there either got me back on track; or enabled me to try something I'd never thought of b4.
I may b a seasoned-writer...but I still NEVER wanna stop learning my fave-hobby & trade.
We writer's must always b honing our craft--especially due to the flooded market of social-media AMATEUR-writer wanna-bees!
