I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

Need some advice here. I am a fullstack developer with 5 yoe in Angular and Python. My aim is to crack FAANG companies. Now I got an offer from HSBC in a credit risk model monitoring role using Python. It is close to a data engineer role.
My question is that will it be a good idea to shift from development role to a model monitoring role if I want to move to FAANG in the future?Or does FAANG not prefer people who are not in core development roles?Amazon Microsoft Google Adobe PwC EY Citi Barclays JPMorgan Chase
Happy new year everyone👍🏼

You think it’s crazy that the job that’s paying you to work full time wants all of your time?
I think it’s absolutely lunatic yes 😂
When I hired my full time copywriter, I’d initially said that moonlighting is forbidden; however, after further consideration, I did away with that. It’s none of my business how a team member chooses to utilize their spare time. Inflation is high and people are doing the best they can to survive. So long as the quality of work completed for my company doesn’t wane and isn’t in violation of the NDA and non-compete clause we sign with our clients, I respect someone’s decision to take on more work.
THANK YOU THIS!!!
You can, just not for other agencies. If you find small gigs on the side with clients and can protect your time so it never interferes with your main job, nothing is stopping you.
Ah...come again? You should always be freelancing.
Who cares though how are they going to find out?
You can freelance even if it says you can't in your contact, you just tell no one at your full time job. It's a don't ask don't tell thing
Nothing ventured nothing gained.
Yea just disregard that. I’ve never seen anybody taken to task or, more importantly, taken to court over shit like that.

Speak for yourself! 😜
That’s wild. I’ve never in all my F/T gigs been told I can’t take on outside portfolio work.
Yeah it’s basically a conflict of interest which I understand but as a creative, it’d be so beneficial to “perfect” your craft if you can
