It probably varies depending on organizations, but at a lot of places company events can count for a lot. If you eschew them, people may think you're odd or anti-social. And it is a chance to get to know people, and have people know what you are like. If you hide from leadership it probably reduces your chance for advancement.

Yeah, I get that. I understand the leadership visibility part, so I do try to show up to these things now. But sometimes I still wonder, with that many people at the events, are they really noticing me? It can feel a bit hit or miss.
I've never been great at social events but I will say,, especially in this environment, networking is important. I've forced myself to get better at networking and when I was displaced last Hearst, one of my contacts was key to me getting back in less than 2 months. So take any opportunity to grow your network. Working hard matters, I've received promotions for taking on hard work, but networking has also been vital for my career a well. As with anything, balance is best.

I really appreciate you sharing that. It’s a good reminder that networking isn’t just a “nice to have,” it actually makes a real difference. I’m still trying to get more comfortable with it myself, so hearing how it helped you bounce back so quickly definitely makes it feel more worth the effort.

If you’re good meeting people I’m sure you can make some good contacts.
They are a social formality. I have never had a company event benefit my career in any way. It gets to be seen, sure, but that doesn't really matter in the long run.

That's how I feel, unless you are very good at networking and making connections in those events...
I definitely would say attend those events as it’s a way to show your presence and interact if anyone would be wanting to interact with you like seniors/ colleagues from other departments (networking)etc.

Yeah, that’s a good way to look at it. Even just being there and open to conversations can go a long way, especially with people outside your immediate team.
