Ugh first off - I feel this so much! I recently have had the opportunity to work with a VP who is clearly introverted and even labeled himself as such. He only speaks when he wants to (not super often) and when he unmutes his mic it’s the gold stuff. Obvi he’s not a VP for no reason - but it gives me reassurance that we ~quiet~ folk can contribute as much as anyone else. Just gotta stop being so hard on yourself cos that takes a lot of emotional energy away from working in a direction that serves you and the type of personality you have.
This is great, thank you for sharing!!
Omg that’s me. Sometimes I got so nervous that i have to write down things and read them during meeting if I know what I’m gonna say.
Same here
I feel you
😭
Definitely, but the good news is there are solutions, depending on exacting what makes you nervous. What is it for you? Are you afraid of getting questions and not mowing the answer? Are you shy? Intimidated?
First of all, realize that you have been hired because the firm thinks you are good at this. You should try to frame the the attention as “I’ve done the analysis and reviewed it, and now people are here to listen to it because it’s a good analysis”.
Then try to seize every opportunity to practice in front of a friendly group: many firms have practical presentation trainings, where you get a group of people in a room and everyone presents an old deck of theirs to everyone else. There are stakes (usually a few senior people who will give you advice on how to improve), but they are not very high. Plus, since you know the material already you get to focus on the presentation.
Finally, for me it’s more the unexpected attention I hate (e.g. you get asked something during a family dinner and suddenly everyone stops talking and listens to you, or in a business setting someone dodges a question by throwing you under the bus): again, prepping on the material and the overall context of the project helps loads (it still sucks, but at least you don’t have to also come up with the answer).
I feel exactly the same. I am so awkward and conscious when the spotlight is on me.
Yup. I have the exact same problem
