I literally just had a vendor (creative agency) take something I said in a meeting & pitch it to the clients, so I know my ideas are at least somewhat good, but I don't have a book or anything to back it up. Also, not trying to make this shift soon, maybe in the next 2-3 years, because I feel like the planning perspective is important, so any input on where I should look as a bridge to creative would be great as well!
I cant give you any advice but I’m wishing you the best of luck. We’re all trying to make it!
I used to be an AE. Find a CD or senior creative willing to mentor you. Build a book. Sounds like you have the ideas. Can you write or art direct? You could go back to school but I didn’t. Maybe the local community colleges have a few classes. I know there is at least a facebook group for finding other creatives who want to work on spec. Read the Advertising Concept Book. Ask a CD to be put on a few projects and do them in your after-hours. You can make it happen. It’s a lot of work. I’ve been a writer now for 12 years. Good luck!
@CD1, thanks for the advice! I'm at a media only agency, so unfortunately there's no CDs easily available to me, but I'll definitely keep an eye out going forward. Also -- I'm on the writing side. Did a couple of content marketing (blog posts that tried to be relatable but was really more of a glorified press release; I didn't get to choose my topics, unfortunately) internships throughout college, ran a nonprofit’s blog for a bit, but unfortunately they've since updated their website and gotten rid of all my posts.
Are you in Chicago? Might be worth checking out the Chicago Ad Fed Career Day next week!

I'm in NYC, but I can check to see if there's similar things here as well!
Follow-up to this, has anyone heard of a hackathon type thing for advertising?
