I’d say it’s a great way to get into nonprofit work! It’s usually easy to secure a staff attorney position at the end of the fellowship, a lot of people stay at the same organization. That being said, it’s still relatively low pay even for immigration law. You could be better off starting in private practice and then transitioning back to nonprofit, in a supervisor position, and for a higher salary. That’s what I did and I don’t regret it!
I agree with this! Except that many nonprofits prefer to hire supervisors with nonprofit background & experience. So, unless you have significant nonprofit / social justice experience prior to private practice, you may be at a disadvantage. You would at least need to make a strong case for why you are committed to social justice, despite the years in private practice. This is likely easier at bigger, more institutionalized nonprofits than smaller, progressive orgs. I'll also add that IJC has amazing training.
