I'm a "Managing Associate" at Sidley. It just means 4th through 6th year associates. When you become a 4th year, you get a week of Columbia business school training on management. Just Sidley's way to delineate between juniors and mids and try to encourage better management skills. We know the title is a bit silly, but think it comes from a good place.
Oh that’s cool and tracks with my experience. Thank you!
Pretty sure A1 is incorrect. I'm not at Sidley, but when the news came out I was under the understanding that, for partner-track attorneys, mid-levels were becoming Managing Associates and seniors were becoming Senior Managing Associates. I'm skeptical a 2nd year is a Managing Associate on Sidley's website. You do get access to some business classes/training I believe and other professional development programs.
Maybe they got credit for clerkship - but finished clerkship in 2021 and listed as managing associate.
It’s neither. They are basically offered managerial/leadership training. And other things along those lines. I know a second year who is a “managing associate” so nothing to do w/ seniority/partnership.
AA1 is incorrect. My statement above is correct. And true, senior associates are now "senior managing associates".
A1 and AA1 are both wrong. “Managing associates” are actually paralegals who “manage” clients’ records, cap table, documents and records, etc.
