It’s called work for a reason. Remote work arrangements might allow you to travel and work remotely for a few weeks at a time, but if you want three months off a year get a job as a schoolteacher. Or bust your ass as retire at 40.
That’s a typical ego driven… arrogant attorney remark and it’s so untrue …
that’s what happens when you fly on ego you ultimately…drown in it!!
Some professors are paid very well…
A fact … they get treated with respect and they don’t have a bunch of ‘arrogant’ coyotes nipping at their heels.
Is a wonderful thing to have your summers off… Travel and have fun with your family!!
It makes for a longer healthier and happier lifetime. You won’t be young forever!!!
Much healthier for the mind & the body… and a longer life… STRESS KILLS!
Perhaps contract work through Axiom or similar gigs. I hear contract roles are pretty long and you can usually plan for breaks in between contract roles.

Work as a solo and have your own shop/firm
good idea but it does take a little bit to ramp up a solo practice. i think OP would still be looking at ~5 yrs (at least) before getting to a point where taking an entire summer off would be okay (though I am still confused how you ignore a case load for an entire summer??)
I know some judges that take August off.
judges being the key title here.
The first thing I thought of was in house for a charter school, but even then, their litigation doesn’t stop when kids go home for the summer. Doubtful.
We hire contract attorneys at my firm. They let us know their availability and we send them stuff. I did it for a while before I got a FT offer. It’s my plan to go back to that when loans are paid off and other financial goals are met.
Yes, remote. $50-$100 an hour. No specific YOE required but they need to be experienced enough to handle things on their own. We will give examples, directions, and answer any questions but if work product is bad, we won’t give them anymore work. So it’s a good gig but kinda sink or swim. I had 6 YOE when I did it. I would have stuck with it but the FT offer included an incentive plan so it made more financial sense right now.
FIRE or Coast FIRE and get a part time gig (can be a non legal role) that will allow you much more free time year round
Book store, bakery, humane society, and the like.

If you’re working in a BigLaw firm, get transferred to a foreign branch office where you want to learn the language.
this is a smart idea too!
I mean some law firms would probably let you do that provided you absolutely killed yourself and reached your billable target before the off time. You’d probably have to be somewhat senior for that though. Or maybe of counsel? The law firm lawyers would know more about this
I just became a fourth year and I'm just trying to hold on for as long as they let me. I'm considering lateralling somewhere where the bonus is market since I'm billing so much but I really like my cases and most of my colleagues though there are some I definitely avoid working with. Plus I've established a good enough reputation here. Despite my rough last year I'm actually worried about hours this year since all of our major cases have slowed and not much is on the horizon
Of course, just open your own office. BigLaw you sacrifice something whether it’s your soul or your time. Pick your poison ☠️
I’m in-house and after 10 years I get 7 weeks PTO that accrues each year and carries over to the following year, with a max of something like 16 weeks. I could take off two months of the summer every year and while it would be frowned upon I wouldn’t get fired over it.
Taking summers off? As in like June - August? No…. Maybe 3-4 weeks off in that time, yes.
My firm allows hourly (contract) work for certain practices and would allow hop-on/hop-off arrangements for the right person and practice.
i strive to one day be this important to my firm.
Move to Europe.
In North America you only get a little bit of vacation every year. Practice law across the pond in Europe and you’ll do much better in terms of having time off. In the UK you get 5-8 weeks off a year.
Running your own firm works well in theory but you’ll have to work overtime for years to get it off the ground and then to find someone you can trust with your caseload for the time you’re away.

Ask for whatever you want.
and don’t be shocked when you’re told no 😂
Not at anywhere close to Biglaw comp if that matters.
