Don’t laugh at me, but are there any lawyer jobs that let you take summers off? Making great money in biglaw but want to travel and learn languages.

It’s called work for a reason. Remote work arrangements might allow you to travel and work remotely for a few weeks at a time, but if you want three months off a year get a job as a schoolteacher. Or bust your ass as retire at 40.

That’s a typical ego driven… arrogant attorney remark and it’s so untrue …
that’s what happens when you fly on ego you ultimately…drown in it!!

Some professors are paid very well…
A fact … they get treated with respect and they don’t have a bunch of ‘arrogant’ coyotes nipping at their heels.

Is a wonderful thing to have your summers off… Travel and have fun with your family!!
It makes for a longer healthier and happier lifetime. You won’t be young forever!!!

Much healthier for the mind & the body… and a longer life… STRESS KILLS!

Perhaps contract work through Axiom or similar gigs. I hear contract roles are pretty long and you can usually plan for breaks in between contract roles.

Put in your dues and grind for 15-20 years, build a massive book, then do whatever you want. you will never be “off” but you will have a ton of money to travel in style and you will figure it out. I travel for at least 7 full weeks a year (3-4 of which is straight through in the summer), then tons of other 4-5 day weekend trips. I manage it so when I travel I’m not doing more than 4 or so hours a day, some much less, and that’s primarily just managing and taking massively important calls.

I’ve found that I need to completely forget about the job every now and then for my mental and physical wellbeing. That’s worth more than money to me. Happy for you that is not something you need.

I’m at a small-midsize firm, and the only folks who have negotiated such a thing are the partners for whom a 3-month sabbatical has been an option. One used it to take her family to Asia for a quarter. It’s a hard sell if you are a high performer, because of the hit the firm takes to revenue in your absence. You’d have to figure out a way to annualize your revenue without working those three months, or else have seniority / a very supportive team that can subsidize your salary and run things in your absence. It’s more of a once in a lifetime arrangement though, I can’t fathom it working out annually

Mastercard has a 4-week “work from anywhere” policy. Exactly what it sounds like. You can work from anywhere in the world. No need to be on any office. And people typically had a couple extra weeks on to it for a longer stay.
I’ve seen other companies with similar “work from anywhere we have an office” policy. Look for companies that offer this. Or fully remote.

Yes. Contract document review, though I don't think it's for everyone. You can work 80 hour weeks for six months and take a month off between gigs.

great goal and side passion. however, you’re in big law. i’m not sure of your associate year or practice area, but taking an entire summer off .. is quite the ask, even for a senior senior level attorney in big law. i would say this is a goal for you to have for like 15-20 (maybe even more?) years down the line.

you can also find a remote job? i’ve worked at firms that are solely wfh (besides any necessary court appearances that might be scheduled in person, not sure if you go to court often or at all bc idk your practice area). but, with that arrangement, we pretty much were allowed to travel whenever we wanted as long as we got our work done + make MP aware we were traveling. i don’t think this is a common arrangement though.

one other idea - not sure how receptive your firm would be or if this is offered. a sabbatical? or some type of gap year? i bet if you framed it the right way to your firm, you could make them see a benefit to letting you take an extended period of time off to travel and learn languages and then come back.

Should I refer my SO to Google?
(Does she have a real shot?)

She's a Project Manager at a global auto parts manufacturer.
Her role is 30% technical, 70% business (meaning she has good problem solving and stakeholder mgmt skills).
5 YOE+Degree at a top engineering school in Europe
My experience at Google made her interested in joining the company, but we never really acted on it.
Could she be a good fit?
If so which areas/orgs?

(Also, are there any rules against it?)

Hey so just to check on my part. I worked at a place where we went to a firm happy hour and women attorneys were there. A picture was passed around of a really hot woman on Instagram who they are oggled , later after the woman left some guy talked about all the quote whores he slept with. The women weren't sex workers presumably. I'm a male this behavior seems inappropriate to me and made me uncomfortable. Am I expected to exhibit this level of 1950s machismo in my day-to-day life?
