Just my random thought…most folks who are good at data engineering aren’t good on the human capital side. One is very quantitative while the other is qualitative. You may be the unicorn, but those chances are slim. Do some serious soul searching and be honest with yourself. The answer will lie there
All can pay very well but are very different career paths. If you like hands on problem solving / coding in SQL and Python - DE. If you have at least a semi-technical background and like being a liaison between business and engineering teams - PM. If you hate tech - HC. I recently switched to DE from a PM-type role and I’m really enjoying it so far. I spend way less time in meetings and get to use my brain way more than I ever did at my previous job. DE is also one of the fastest growing fields in tech and there’s a shortage of skilled workers, making now a great time to jump in. On average, I’d guess that DE pays the most, followed by PM then HC. PMs at top companies are paid extremely well but those roles are very competitive.
Assuming you’re an average performer at an average company, definitely DE. PMs at FAANG make big bucks, but the vast majority of PMs working at normal companies make nowhere near as much. Likewise with HC and top consulting firms.
