I completely understand where you’re coming from. Business travel is as bland as it gets... airports, meeting rooms, and very little of the real city. I got to see a glimpse of Tokyo and even just that has me so locked in. If I ever had the luxury of time, I’d love to immerse myself in Japan again but not just Tokyo’s energy... also Kyoto’s temples, and the countryside’s tranquility.
Enthusiast
I realize this isnt feasible most of the time, but if there are trips across the country/world, I do try and take time off the front or back end of the trip if possible to at least get a day or even half a day to enjoy where I am visiting.
This is the way. I travelled for 30 years and went to a lot of cool places. Occasionally I went early or stayed the weekend after to explore. Sometimes I brought my wife. NOT nearly enough. Most of the time, I really just wanted to get home at the end of the wee, or I had a busy schedule, so I skipped the experience thinking I would get back in the future. I’m retired now and I didn’t “get back there.” I wasted a lot of opportunities. I blew it for Lisbon, Prague, Japan, England, San Francisco, NY, and scores of US cities. Looking back this is one of the regrets I have about my career. It sounds trite, but stop and smell the roses.
Experiencing a place at my own pace sounds like the ultimate reward after years of whirlwind work trips. Can't wait to get there in life.
