Family law associate. I run a docket of about 40-50 cases and work about 50 hours a week. I currently make about 125K (self-employed, no benefits). Between jury trials for CPS termination cases and the highly adversarial nature of family law, I find this job to be incredibly draining, as I have horrid work/life balance and struggle with constant anxiety.

I recently got an offer with a personal injury firm. 110K, full benefits, for a non-litigation/docket manager role. Thoughts?

I did the exact same thing recently. I went from working 6 years in family law and switched to med mal defense this year. It’s been a life changer. I don’t think I’ve felt this calm since I started working. I say go for it!

Jump. If you miss litigating, then make sure the new offer has some origination bonuses and cherry pick what you bring in.

Where do you practice? There's only like 5 states that do CPS termination jury trials, that's why im asking.

like

I'm in one of them, and trying to figure out the best way to recruit a lateral with that skillset

Careful of being pigeonholed as a "support" lawyer. Ask if there is an opportunity to carry a light litigation load, unless you have soured on litigation in general. Good luck either way.

like

Hell yeah!

Where do you practice? What is the size of the firm you’re at?

Have you negotiated the offer at all?

Even if 110 us the ceiling the full benefits are probably worth at least 10k.

Similar position and i just made the jump to a non-litigation job with same pay and less work with similar bonus potential. I hope i never have to look back. FYI most PI work is just as draining.

I’m in big law and on the cusp of making the jump to in-house. It sounds like the company I just interviewed with is getting ready to make me an offer. It’s definitely going to be a pay cut coming from big law but I do get some nice equity in the company. Is the jump worth it? I’m so burnt out by big law and this seems like an awesome opportunity to help shape a newish company. Any tips on how to figure out if this is the right move for me?

I feel like I was straight up lied to during the interview process. “lots of opportunities to hit quota”. I’m sitting here with only one demo two months after joining the company. it looks like our team has only two people doing demos, and demos are only happening once every two weeks. At this rate, I don’t think I’ll be even close to hitting OTE. Are there any other companies hiring right now? I’ll have a discussion about my concerns with my manager soon, but there’s too many red flags here.

My client wants both parties to list assets & liabilities as an exhibit to their prenup without values, but waive the right to know the actual valuation of those in the prenup itself. My initial thought is this is a terrible idea & would probably make the prenup easily voidable since a main requirement for a prenup is for both to understand the nature and value of the other’s assets. I will research in my jurisdiction to confirm, but has anyone ever heard of/done this? Thoughts?

Do you think experience as a DA or PD would be valuable, with my eye toward a future in FL? Both for the skills gained, and/or as a resume piece?
