I can't speak for Amazon, but it's not at all uncommon for interns to have standardized pay. On top of that, it's also not uncommon for consulting firms to have salary cohorts, so it can be pretty easy to figure out salaries in those instances.
Lol do you live under a rock?
Anyone in a managerial position will very likely know the salaries of people reporting to them. In industry this is fairly standard. In consulting, salaries at bands are pretty standardised and also quite public. In tech, I’d imagine it’s somewhere between the two.
Think you’ve just not been in a managerial role OP or close enough to your reportee’s progress/development to know this.
I have a set dollar amount and set equity amount I can divvy annually.
We know we do things weird but most people want equity so it’s less of an issue. Nobody is going to argue that the CHRO that manages all salaries is the ultimate boss.
It’s also common in many industries for your manager to know your pay. They usually have a hand in determining raises for their people. So HR says you have $100,000 in raises to divvy up, and they have to determine who’s getting what based on how they were rated that year.

In Deloitte, based on whatever I know, only the Finance Controller team may know your actual salary or may be the Project MDs. Do even the Senior Manager know the salary of the folks on their project by any chance?
In industry, most managers know the salaries of their direct reports. If they don’t have budget responsibility, they might not, but most managers have budget responsibility. That is how they staff.
Intern pay is usually standardized. Not unusual at all.
Project leadership will generally know your loaded cost, which is different than your salary because it plays in to project finances. Finance Controller generally doesn’t have any direct involvement in employee pay, they’d typically only see anonymized “rolled up” salary numbers.
The person who is responsible for your compensation decisions and their leadership + HR Compensation professionals are typically able to see your salary information. Beyond that it’s not typical for others to have access to salary information.
All this is from US perspective and it sounds like you’re not US based so may vary a bit.
This was my line of thought as well. Thanks for your reply.
Can confirm that it’s true. I am responsible for sharing and releasing annual comp numbers to my team. I have visibility into the comps of all my DR’s.
Additionally, at Google, we have an internal pay dashboard, where we self report our numbers, so everyone who accesses the dashboard can get a sense of where we fall in the band.
You don’t need to know exact number you can guess it with 95% accuracy. Use levels . fyi
I also outlined typical exit comp from consulting here

Any place I've worked interns got the same standardized pay.
Most firms know what other levels pay, either because they went through that level themselves or its published on industry websites.
