Hey!! I asked my mom since she’s been going this for 15 years (everything from PMO to strategy to digital product development) and she says in order to make up for lack of benefits and cover insurance, corporate taxes etc. she charges 2-6x the market FTE salary, depending how much she wants to win the work. ~2x if she is plugging into a team (staff aug) and ~6x+ if she’s going to be running the show and is bringing all the expertise. Very rough rule of thumb is your rate should be 3x the salary you want, with 1/3 allocated for taxes and 1/3 allocated for benefits.
That doesn't account for BD time or unstaffed time, that's just assuming you're staffed 100% of the time, so adjust accordingly.
My personal standard is to set your rate based on a salary over 1600 hours vs 2080 and then run the math on that.
My standard Rate is $300 an hour..... thats about 3x my base salary.
