1. Check usajobs.gov, individual court websites, and your state/city govt websites, and LinkedIn.
2. Focus on networking. Identify alums from your law school working in govt roles (LinkedIn is good for this) and reach out for informational interviews. They can shed light on how to make the transition, what experience you should be trying to get, tips for applying to jobs at their agency, etc. They may also be able to move your application along in the hiring process when you do apply for an opening.
I feel like we are exactly the same person, OP! Following cus I wish I had the answers, too.
Higher Ed administration can be a true “9-5” in some cases. I recently transitioned from practicing at a large law firm to law school career services at a tier 2 law school on the east coast. Salary is above your desired range, and so far it’s been a true “9-5”. The work can get into low 6-figures with 7+ years of experience, but there are tons of other benefits, like lots of time off when school is closed, tuition waivers, and typically solid HC and retirement plan contribution matching.
Plus, working with students is incredibly rewarding. HigherEd Jobs is a common site schools post on for openings if you want to check it out.
Considered clerking?
Be careful with clerkships. I learned how prevalent bullying and other narcissistic behavior is among judges.
I have been there, done that! I just started reading the group on fishbowl today and I have shared this a lot! I love the law and helping people but the job was not what I wanted. I ended up starting a legal resource brokerage. I help a lot of people and make much better money but do not have to do the tedious part of the job! Think outside of the box is the best advice I can give.
