First round interview with Slalom went well, but they want me to pay for my own travel for the next round. Is that typical? I agreed but I was kind of 😒.

@S2, even industry jobs pay for you to travel to their offices if they are in a different market, pretty hard to sell yourself to a potential candidate if you aren't willing to fork over the 1k or so in incremental recruiting expense

like

OP who are you traveling to meet, would this be a final round?

Honestly if the office isn't interested enough to spend $500 to get you out there for the day... I don't understand why you would travel on your own dime.

If you are a strategy consultant as your title says you are - you have to be smart enough to say no. You lose all leverage and look desperate. If you are willing to fly out there - all leverage on salary negotiations is lost.

like

Whether it's a test or a policy it looks like most of us would pass. So it looks like Slalom wants doormats or desperate people...or people who love the place so much that they'd pay to work there. No offense intended to the OP.

like

Common slalom guys, you guys are contradicting what you said in initial few posts! Once that didn't work, now you are ganging up together to make OP a troll....

like

Slalom 3 - you might as well try to overhaul the whole recruiting process. Also train your recruiters and let them know that just ignoring your prospective employees is highly unprofessional. You just can't expect professionalism from one side and completely ignore it from yours.

like

Amazing how peoples perspectives are so quickly shifted to the negative. So many good things said about Slalom in the industry, one - ONE - bad experience (I don't remember seeing much other negative perspectives about Slalom here), and people decide they don't want to apply to them? And you guys call yourself consultants? Aren't you supposed to make educated decisions after considering all available input? If you are the kind of consultant who jumps to decisions based on ONE observation, I'd say Slalom was better off without you. Personally, I've engaged Slalom for projects when I was in the industry, and have had nothing but good things to say about them. My friends who have worked there love the place as well.

I'm hoping that was just a misunderstanding. Never heard of that

like

Think about it folks, Slalom is looking to deploy their consultants locally within their own markets. If they have a good pool of local resources/potentials within their market, why would they cover travel expenses for out of market candidates? That is unless you have the potential to take in lots of revenue (I.e sales, business dev, senior management etc.) Basic economics - supply /demand.

What is a slalom?

like

Yes that's typical. They told the same to me and said they focus on local model so they won't pay to fly me out to the interview. The worst is that they will slow down to a point that you won't hear from them for 3-4 weeks at a time. The whole process was a joke.

like

Slalom PR team took over the thread. Are you guys that desperate?

like

Don't do it

like

Lol, well at the end you obviously have an option. No one is forcing you to join Slalom!

like

Hell no. If you want me then I'm worth a plane ticket.

like

Crickets from OP on reason why travel is required.

Unless a local office is recruiting them, I don't see why they would pay for interview travel, especially for a jr role.

like

Nope. They going to pay your in crackers too?

Maybe OP = 👹👹👹👹⚪️

I have an interview with Slalom tomorrow. I'm local so I didn't come across that event. They pay to validate parking though lol.
