He should resign. He may not have been at the scene, but he oversaw the hiring practices that brought the deputy into the department. The guy had problems everywhere else he worked, including in the military, and yet they hired him and put him on the streets. How could that happen?

Eh. I don’t think he should resign. Controversial opinion. Yeah, he oversaw the person who killed her, but ultimately, it’s a systematic issue that needs third party correction and accountability. Firing him won’t change anything. It’s a systematic issue. Look at police training.

Two weeks ago, I wanted him to resign. Fast-forward to today, I want him to stay so he can bear the consequences of his actions. He should be in the room when the family is negotiating a settlement. He should be the person who has to tell the taxpayers why the county can't get new roads because they have to pay out this lawsuit. If the DOJ makes them enter a consent decree, he should be the person who has to make sure it gets implemented CORRECTLY
Plus, whenever there's a new leader (be it a new manager, sheriff, CEO, etc.), by the time the new leader gets acclimated to the job, gains the respect of employees, etc., the new leader usually follows whatever was happening before them. And if the new leader comes in and fires everyone, that usually leads to more problems.
As associate 1 said, this is a systemic issue. Since HIS systems create problems, HE needs to be the person who fixes them. 😤
