For folks in S&O, bizops, etc. How big are data/analytics skills in your roles?

I’m a current consultant in payments (more project management focused, and framework/slide development stuff), and got rejected from a role that I really wanted.

I’m thinking my limited data background might have hindered me, so I’m leaning towards building out that skill set but hoping to get a sense of how deep I should go.

I'm in SE&O biz ops role. Honestly it depends on your role. Obviously if youre looking at the BI team those skills are expected. In my role it was more about finding patterns, navigating a complex org chart to know who to solve for what. It's like just in general problem solving and execution. It's a given that you need to know how to navigate Power BI, excel, etc. But in my experience it isn't much beyond that. You are more likely not to get an opportunity if you don't have much sales ops/sales strategy experience.

Thank you for sharing your insight!

I'm on the BizOps team at Google. To be honest it's unlikely your experience will be highly relevant to most similar roles. Decent analytics is important for many roles, and traditional strategy work is usually the preferred background since it's most similar to the job. The market is also extremely tight right now (low # jobs + tons of current & ex consultants applying), so it may be difficult

I think your skills may be more immediately appealing to project or program management roles, which can often involve a fair bit of strategic problem solving skills and can pay very well

Directly re: how deep you need to go, being good at spreadsheets + visualization + something for when data gets too big (e.g. R, Python, Alteryx) is good but I think hiring tends to reward relevant experience / won't give you great chances demonstrate independently learned skill

like

Thanks for this! Totally agree on the tight job market right now, I’ll beef up my data + data viz skills and maybe look for something payments related when the time/opportunity is right.

Appreciate you sharing your insight 😊
