For people at JL, does anyone else feel like they try to pigeonhole you/make you focus on one type of practice or litigation as an associate? It’s like if you express interest in one type of litigation (wage and hour, class actions, etc.) or type of work (WARN/RIF work) then you almost aren’t allowed to explore other types, especially if another associate in your office is interested in it.

Yes. I think that’s the case at the other L&E firms. They want us to specialize in certain areas of L&E

like

I’ll give a different perspective on it. 95% of the attorneys at an L&E firm can handle labor work or single plaintiff employment discrimination cases. You cannot separate yourself from the rest of the associates that way. The niche areas are areas that, if you master, can be a direct path to shareholder status. I encourage people to pick niches not to pigeonhole them, but to make them more valuable.

What’s a fair expectation for my first raise? Publicly traded co with ~2500 employees. I’ve been doing litigation with the company for almost 3 yrs and have only had a 2% cost of living raise so far. Graduated in 2014. Base comp is $127.5k in the Philly area. I see salaries all over the place in this site and it’s hard to tell whether mine is competitive.

Recently received an offer from Ogletree to do only class action work. It'll be a big change for me, I'll be starting as a fourth year. Double my current salary, etc.

What will this be like? It's more of a niche, but lucrative, part of their practice, right? Will I really get good WLB like they claim? I have a nice 40 hour a week job right now, no billables.

What is considered a “large” caseload in employment litigation? I work at a large L&E boutique law firm and handling about 14-15 active litigation cases in state/federal court or arbitration. Some of these matters are multi-plaintiff and multi-defendant cases, but none are class actions. This does not include any matters I am handling in the charge stage or in pre-litigation. Not sure if that’s a typical caseload or not?

Hello, I’m an associate (almost at the one year mark) at a midsize firm on the EPL team. I did about 2 years of employment law as a clerk during school and know that’s what I want to go into. I’ve asked for more EPL work but keep catching PI cases. I second-chaired an employment trial but don’t see any EPL work for the foreseeable future and wasn’t getting as much EPL exposure as I wanted before the trial. Any advice on a lateral move to a bigger firm with a broader range of EPL work?
