I’m in biotech and I haven’t used a referral for any of my positions. I’ve heard it can be great though.
Referrals help a great deal. When I receive a personalized email of recommendation from someone I know, referring a candidate, that means a great deal versus the many other applicants with no additional context. An interview isn’t guaranteed with referral, but you’re likely to be high on the screening list.
Referrals don’t matter if you pay a numbers game and just apply wherever you can see yourself doing the job. Coming out of school, my feeling based on myself is 50-100 jobs and you’ll find one. A referral can bring that number closer to 50 and lower if you’re lucky. The only place I had a referral for didn’t interview me at all. 🤣
Referral 100% matter. The higher you go the more it matters.
