For QA/automation roles (mid–senior), quick question on comp ranges:

I mentioned $125k and was told it was too high but could continue if open to negotiate, which I did.

They said the max is ~$100k–$110k, despite a posted range of $65k–$138k. Is that a real cap or just positioning (budget/leveling)?

With 6 years experience (2 above the minimum), and bringing API, database, and automation experience, is pushing for $125k–$135k at offer stage reasonable? Especially in consulting/federal spaces?

I would also evaluate the type of work that entails the role. Sometimes, even though the title seems great, the type of work doesn’t quite aligned hence the lower range offered. During the interview, I hope you were able to get some insights on the type of work you will be doing in the role, from there you can evaluate whether that salary cap they are putting you in justifies the work you will be doing.

Yes, the work I will be doing is similar to what I am doing now. I got insights into the job and got good feedback from the team. Thank you for your advice!

If you were told $125k was too high, then you can’t continue asking for $125k+ and expect it to end well.

You are allowed to walk away

If 65-138 is the range for the position they are not going to bring someone in at the very top of the range unless they are desperate to fill immediately.

Let’s say hypothetically they give you 125 and you get 3-4% raises a year. after 2 years you would be capped at the top and would likely be unhappy and leave because you hit a wall on salary growth unless they increase the range.

Also many times at least in the state you’ll find that a posted salary role is for “nationwide“ whereas your individual state salary band is much lower.

I think that’s a bait and switch or they should call it out on their page on their posting that this is a national salary band and your actual band will vary based on your state.

I live in the Washington DC area. Which is one of the highest in the nation. It doesn’t make sense why they would tell me $110 max. Even though I meet pretty much all of the requirements

I’m a non-TX immigration attorney mentoring a UT student who went to my undergrad. He’s done incredibly well in OCI and pre-OCI. Thus far, he’s landed interviews with (all in Houston): Baker Botts, Sidley Austin, Kirkland, Winston Strawn, Reed Smith, Norton Rose, and Locke Lord. Also Perkins Coie in Dallas. He’s leaning transactional, but also open to litigation. Any insights/advice on these firms in the TX market? Any to avoid?

For expert witnesses/lawyers

I’m a former forensic scientist that left the field several years ago. I recently received a subpoena from a case I worked and suggested to DA to have evidence re-worked by the lab or stipulation. If I am required to testify (as an expert witness), I would need to book a flight, hotel, etc. My question is this: can I ask for my requested hourly rate, travel, and hotel to be covered when speaking with DA or is that “not how this works” as the investigator put it?

Hi All! Looking for some advice. I am a manager a country club but I do everything. I’m in charge of outside events and member events, in charge of the front of house staff, scheduling, ordering and membership sales for the club. I feel I am very underpaid at $45k. I do get commission but it’s very low ($10k give or take for the year). I work 6/7 days a week sometimes 10+ hrs/day. I’ve been researching salaries to be able to negotiate higher pay. I want to ask for $60k-is this reasonable?

I’ve been approached my by company that one of our large clients (who im currently project managing for) is looking for a consultant of sorts, and if they hire us, I’d be the first person asked to take on this consultant role. This isn’t something my company typically offers and would greatly change the scope of my role. Has anyone ever taken on a role like this? If so, were you able to negotiate a percentage of the consulting fee? Or was it a bump in salary during the project?

My husband just received a job offer on an opportunity he is really excited about. It would be great for his career and they are giving the 15% jump in base he asked for, however they won’t share what the target bonus amount would be. It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year. Is it a red flag for them to not share this? His total comp could be less at this new job…
