It’s awful. I didn’t survive a pandemic just to microwave sad lunches under fluorescent lights again. Remote forever or bust.
Hybrid is fine. This is going to sound like I’m talking out of both sides of my mouth, but i don’t mind going in.
That said, there is no justification for any of us to be in an office. It’s a *significant* productivity drop, a waste of commute time, a climate nightmare. Culture-wise, “Forced fun” activities have shown to not have a significant impact on attrition, but does cause hardship for parents. The modern office was ruined when walls came down under the manufactured, immeasurable “collaboration increase.” (There remains no data twenty years later to suggest open plans were effective at collaboration. Eliminating cubicles and offices was an unmitigated failure.)
I’m an audience of one but i do see personal value in coming in. I like my colleagues a lot and notice myself empathizing with work scenarios more when everyone isn’t a face on zoom. I like the walk and noticing new things around the city. And it’s easier to be a shoulder to cry on when my shoulder is physically there.
If i had to I’d make it two days. But three works. Caveat: I’m also not a mediocre boomer who needs to politic, pretend to work or micromanage nor do i live too far from work.
We went hybrid halfway through last year. I'm fully expecting full RTO to happen this year. I hate it. The first week or two it was a kind of nice change of pace, and then I remembered why WFH is so much better. I'm spending way too much time commuting, I'm constantly distracted by office chatter, and I don't feel like I'm doing as good of work as a result. Not. A. Fan.
This is an alarming trend, I fear the more that do it the more will follow. Did they atleast put a distance cap, for example you are exempt if you will more than 50 miles from an office ?

I’m only back in a couple of times a month. It’s great to see colleagues but the time lost via commute isn’t worth it to me.
