First and most importantly to avoid the depression part you need to understand that this is a job, it is not life, and there is a lot about life other than work and career. There will always be opportunities, you made it that far because you were capable and there will always be a place for capable candidates, if not in consulting then in industry.
On a separate note, everyone I know who got OC’d said it is brighter and greener on the next side 😉
thanks for posting this!
I’ve seen plenty of friends go through the OC process lately, and while it’s a gut punch at first, the after-story is usually way better than the grind they left behind.
Based on what I’ve seen from friends who went through it:
It really isn't the end of the world. Most ended up in roles they like even more than consulting. The main trade-offs were that those staying in consulting often relocated to other regions, while those moving to industry usually took a bit of a pay cut for a better lifestyle.
Most found something new within 3 to 4 months. A good chunk of them actually chose to take about half a year off voluntarily just to clear their heads before jumping back in.
The grass is honestly greener for a lot of them. They finally had time to travel, get back into hobbies, or finish certifications they’d been ignoring for years.
Side gigs are a great way to bridge the gap. Plenty of people picked up freelance consulting work or helped out startups. There are actually a few good posts floating around about agencies that help consultants find these types of short-term projects.
To avoid the slump, you have to stay active. One friend of mine was pretty down at first but then decided to lean into a full-year break. He did some minor consulting on the side, moved to Madrid for a while, and lost 30 kg. He came back a completely different person.
Hang in there—it’s a rare chance to actually hit the reset button.
This is a great post! It has really uplifted me - Thanks so much!!!!! Love the story about your friend that went to Madrid
Coach
Yes 5m off.
4 months to find a job
Can't say, moved to europe for my new job
Make workout your 2 prio after job hunting
Start vibecoding a project even if it leads to nothing
Do a useful course that grants a certificate (eg edX data analytics)
And most importantly dont worry. When you're there it seems like your life is over. Give it time and when you look back you'll find it ridiculous that you had those thoughts
- yes, 2 months
- consider ~6 months
- not great, especially in the industry side. Both in terms of pay and availability of roles. Evaluate some freelance gigs to manage cash flows and expand geography scope of your research if possible
- job hunt in my case did not take me more then 3-4 hours a day so fill your days with a mix of gym, old hobbies, cooking, naps, movies / shows / games, certifications (i did not but i guess it’s something that you can evaluate)
- realize that it’s a unique period of your life where you are going to have a ton of free time. Treat it like a gift and enjoy it as much as possible
thanks for the insight, so true it is a unique period that needs to be made the most of!
Hang in there; this was me last year. decided to take 3 months off, went back home, and jumped into surfing.
connected with a few friends of mine, who work with lots of MISK startups, and got a few remote short-term gigs. 9 months in, I landed an offer with an MBB.
Things will be fine; just try to unwind and take this as an opportunity to reset :)
