The ‘industry is chill’ cliche is overdone imo. Every dir+ I’ve ever worked with in industry works long hours.
First- industry is not a monolith that can be compared to consulting. When you say “chill” , which role and which industry are you thinking ? Tech? PE? Banking ? Space ? None of them are chill. At all.
Second - I find consulting incredibly monotonous and extremely predictable. You are literally trained to become a sales guy. The industry has never invented anything and now simply are sell based on what tech invents. Basically a glorified used car salesperson, which can be exciting if you are into that. Every single company in every industry has a sales division with quotas to fill and commissions to make. How is this dynamic compared to the likes of Anthropic or Google or space or even retail like Walmart ? You think following a piece of paper that tells you what needs to be done in certain amount of time is dynamic ? lol, try owning a product and actually be accountable for taking it to millions.
So to me, specially in an AI focused tech , I make a lot more, it is far more dynamic and it is now where near chill. Those days are gone. I find consulting incredibly morbid and it is great for those who enjoy sales and need clear instructions on what is the job and career track . If I miss word salads and sales, I will simply switch to sales in any industry
so, did u leave consulting for industry?

I came from industry and now in consulting as a cloud engineer. Industry was NOT CHILL!! Consulting feels so cushy comparatively and I enjoy my job much, much more.

Now that I have kids I might appreciate industry again but when I did it in mid twenties I got so bored my wife described me as ‘morose’.
I started with the industry and moved to consulting. Definitely more money at the consulting but I would prefer the industry. The way I see it is, at consulting I mayve able to retire earlier, but how healthy? Not sure. When I was in the industry, I've never worked weekends nor OT but since moving to consulting, it's almost like I'm working two jobs, so questioning the difference in pay.

It’s the reverse for me. I guess it depends what you do. I am a cloud engineer.
For pay and WLB, industry. For growth and opportunities, job hopping in industry. For masochism or first job out of college, consulting.
