It actually wasn't something very high tech and I wasn't even paid for it; but what really got me into this field is this old (and I mean OLD) pinball machine I got when I was a teenager. My Dad knew I wanted to learn more about mechanical things so he thought it would be a fun project to take on together. Let me tell you, that took some serious work over the span of several months; but I got to learn how the machine worked by taking it apart and cleaning all of the pieces. I really loved working on it with Dad and by the time we had the machine working I was hooked. I'll have my degree in a few months
One of our competitors started selling similar products to what we had on the market (industrial scales) so we bought one and took it apart, and in the process found some pretty shoddy construction. So it was really an example of what not to do with our own. The other company's taken a big hit because people are starting to realize that there's a reason they cost less than ours. It was just nice knowing that ahead of time because it helped us not worry too much about the competition, we knew they weren't a serious threat to us.
