OP - wow so when a firm offers people a landing pad so everyone has job security, you respond by being too good for that job?
So basically you want a really competitive interesting job that also has zero attrition
You really seem to have a terrible attitude.
You are in for a very very rude awakening. In life. I came from industry and the same principles apply there. If they are not up and out then you are just a name on a spread sheet. I was a top performer in industry and when times got hard I got cut just like everyone else. 1700 people got hit at once. You have two choices make you own or move to a hippy commune .
Bye Felicia.
@OP how are you so jaded? What have people done to wrong you so badly?
Even if you don't get promoted, it's not game over. You are coming from a good firm and even if you exit on good terms, you will find your footing. If you don't believe in yourself, regardless of the situation, NO ONE WILL
I am happy to do great work elsewhere, only certain types of folks are attracted to this particular "system"
I love up or out, allows for fast-tracking of high potential people and filtering out of under-performers, as opposed to “managing to the mean”.
There’s clearly pros and cons with every system, but this isn’t inherently “evil” any more than capitalism is considered “evil”.
Every firm is pretty clear on their policy, unpredictable circumstances aside, if you didn’t know about it before joining then you’re a fool and only have yourself to blame.
I was told as long as you progress your good, but apparently I just keep getting better at the things I'm really good at and need to significantly improve in other areas or I'm out
I enjoyed what I was doing a lot until this. I know it's a hang up, but I really dislike the idea of being pitted against other people. Mentally trying to not let it ruin it for me. I would encounter coworker's who would "play games" and just thought, o, they don't know any better, maybe raised poorly. Now I think, great, this is what it's all about. I think some things spoke enjoy engaging that way, but I find it sucks my motivation. Best description in a word is yuck
OP you're being a real cliche millennial.
Up or out is basically the same as rank and yank, which has been shown to be ineffective.
How could you have started at a firm without knowing their policy on this? It's a pretty fundamental difference between most of our firms and MBB/ few others
Also OP are you the same one from a post yesterday complaining about her colleagues?
It's manipulative and promotes bad behavior and is disrespectful to employees. It's better suit d for video game design
*bad terms
I'll mail you a participation trophy. It's mostly going to impact Managers, Sr Managers, and MDs that are not performing but were allowed to stick around. They are clogging up the pyramid. They go and it'll free up some movement, so that the good will rise again.
Well, it's a fact that applies across most consulting (or related) firms. Nothing negative about stating the obvious. Now, if OP is 'surprised' by this, then the lad (or lass) is simply a bit naive -- or has been naive -- about the industry.
But let's not kid ourselves that this is a positive or healthful environment, generally. Each of us may have moments of satisfaction and/or fulfillment in increments or specific scenarios, but overall we work in an environment driven by greed and uber-capitalist tendencies. Altruism rarely turns its head and we aren't changing the world. We're helping partners get wealthier while clawing our way to the top of the heap so that we can benefit from the toil of others. Exceptions exist, of course, and few make it to Partner. But none of us are saving lives here.
...so if your constitution can't take it, remove yourself from this gaggle of fevered egos and seek that which may bring you solace and contentment.
Uh how did you not know this? Switch career tracts or leave. We don't need people who just want to chill and be average. Bye Felicia.
In my experience people who actually enjoy the work they do are value, those motivated by elbowing people for promotions suck value. I agree with previous post that it has proven to hurry bottom line.
Totally, because every practice is the same 🙄
