Data from Gauteng suggests that omicron CFR is closer to .4% vs 3.4% for Delta. Hospitalizations and deaths are not following the case spike, and we’ve had enough time to see it.
The data is in. Covid is now Coldvid.
This would be ideal, but still way too early to tell. The rise in cases was so sharp in south africa there hasn’t been enough lag time to fully assess the fatality rate
Be careful comparing covid to the flu on here.

Maybe....still to early to really tell. We have early looks at incomplete data right now.

It depends on the person. 80% of Covid cases pre-vax were described as mild by the WHO. I had Covid pre-vax and felt really crummy for one day and sorta crummy the next. That’s it. I have a friend that passed away from Covid. That’s what makes it so weird/scary as you never know how it will affect you.

Rising Star
Early returns suggest that may be the case. Still way too early in this to conclude anything. I've been told by people who have forgotten way more about viruses than I'll ever know that it's relatively common for viruses to weaken as they mutate over time. And you factor that in with the relatively slow uptick in hospitalizations there's cause for some mild optimism.
Rising Star
It's believed that the less powerful strains overtook the deadlier ones since deadlier ones have a harder time spreading due to making their hosts extremely sick/deceased. That plus a huge number of people developed a level of immunity to the flu from exposure to it or to past influenza strains. Vaccination against influenza wasn't a thing then either, so the only way to develop some level of immunity was via exposure.
It took about 2 full years to end globally, and the 2nd and 3rd waves were the deadliest (which we've coincidentally seen with the current and ongoing pandemic).
This is what we want! More transmissible and less deadly, making its way through the population creating herd immunity (through vaccines or getting the variant).
Omicron is good news!

I would not describe the flu as mild. It hurts so bad lol

Data still incomplete. Also all of the data for ‘milder’ is usually in combined with vaccinated individuals.
The uk is doubling cases per day every 2 days. General severity means very little to my immunocompromised buddy and the 5 million people that have already died.
