Hey, Fishies! We’re launching our first Interview/Q+A series "Portfolio Rewind: Would You Hire You?"
Like a portfolio review in reverse, creative leaders will share work they created when they first started out and critique it as if were a book that had just landed in their inbox. Then, tell us if they’d hire their younger selves knowing, and expecting, what they do now.
Drop in for get the chance to ask questions, and get your book reviewed by our guest. Hope you can make it!

The ECD is def better than u at getting a leadership gig at a name shop. That’s worthy of respect in my book. And I’d wager if u work for him, you’ll eventually learn why.
Agree and good point.
Iodate: met everyone, super sharp and funny across the board, ECD has ascended for a reason: great track record of work for a known brand & clearly has respect of whole team. Onward...
Yes. Just suck it up. As we get older we need to reconcile to the fact that we may one day work for people who once worked for us. If you love the job, leave your prejudice behind. If you hate it, just find something else
It’s all about chemistry. If you feel old amongst them then it’s probably not going to go well. If you think you are that much better than your boss, I’d say you will probably not last there very long.
If you need money to eat, yeah I guess so. It sucks but how many other interviews leads and offers do you have?
Also I agree with @CD1, going into it with the attitude that youre better than your partner and boss will probably be more transparent than you think, and then there goes that.
Why is your book “better”? Past glories or current thinking? Because the former means it will be a rough ride. And the latter means you’ll be great and that’s all that matters. Unless you go to learn and change...
It’s not the easiest industry, but the great opportunities are always new ones which is exciting as f*#k.
Thanks. Agree with all of the above, and that’s been/going to be my approach: feeling that I’m “better,” or my book is, will never be outward, or noticeable...aging means learning how not to be precious about things like title or internal “respect”...not that any of us DON’T want or deserve respect, but I feel I’ve accomplished enough where I can be a mentor and reliable asset vs. some kind of old malcontent grudgingly being in “just” a CD spot.
Have you considered therapy? It can be very useful for talking out career objectives. And nobody is better than anybody. Some people just know how to push their work further or ride on the coattails of others. Humility will get you somewhere though.
Sounds like you have a massive chip on your shoulder that will be evident to everyone. I wouldn’t hire you.
No chip, sorry if it came off that way...just becoming very aware of the fact that at a certain age concessions might need to be made. Title. Salary. Quality of agency/work/people. Location. Whatever. This one just happens to be title. Everything else syncs up. And of all of those, title, I’m realizing, hence this post (and appreciated responses), might not be important—or shouldn’t be, as much—to those of us 40+. And the ECD seems super cool/sharp, so I’m guessing and hoping we would help each other.
Do you have other connections, relationships, or advocates there? Some of these “name” agencies are so political you’ll want someone else in your court.
