Google recruiter won’t give me a range for comp and said to give her a number and she’ll let me know if it’s feasible or not. Anyone know what the average comp would be for an L4 (technical) in Austin

Say, “Oh, wow, we are already discussing comp. Does that mean you’re offering me the role? Because that’s the only time I discuss comp, BEEEEECH” Maybe you leave that last part out, maybe you don’t.

SA1 - yup exactly. Both me and my wife previously worked at FAANG, and she took advantage of this the past year. She wanted to try out a startup so she declined her F offer. When she realized the culture was toxic, she accepted the F offer and joined. It’s fairly common in Big Tech as finding good people is very hard. G and F offer it for sure.

Have never had RSUs before so not sure how much to ask for either and she told me to think of both those numbers. The compensation stats I found online were mostly for MV and none for Austin

1. Go to levels.fyi and look up an comparable role in a comparable city 2. Go on Teamblind and ask this same question 3. Do not be afraid to ask for what you think you’re worse. In no circumstances should you accept an offer just because it’s “Google”.

First off you won’t get screwed. There *is* a range, and you’ll get a salary and RSUs within that range. How far up that range you get is more dependent on the interview performance and HC rating than anything else. What I would say to the recruiter is that “I’m looking for a fair salary for the role and my experience” - nothing more. Your negotiation power from there is in competing offers.

Just venting. I’m tech, and many employees (like 85%) think that being a jerk is a badge of honor and their EQ is like at high school level, so talking to them about diversity issues is like banging head against the wall. They insist that any diversity hire is costing a job to another person with PhD. On top of it, another fancy thing to do in tech is to hate HR. So the conversations usually are like “Oh, you’re in HR, I understand now why you have such a stupid opinion”.
