Happy short month
Do as I say, not as I do

I've had a hybrid role for the past 4 years where I get unlimited sick days (well 14 really until fmla kicked in), 3 weeks of vacation, 3 personal days. I am also given the week after Xmas off. if my toddlers are sick I can work at home with them. Interviewing w fortune 500 that offers 15 pto days that have to use for sick days too.Strictly in office job 9-5 and dress bus.prof. These bad benefits? Outdated culture?I am a seasoned professional. Seems tough.

Linear promotion is a very consulting/IB concept. Big tech growth can be lateral- moving to another role, moving to another org, taking on bigger responsibilities. Same level can be working on a button on UI or releasing a feature to billions. Bands are extremely broad. You obviously have option to climb the ladder. Not everyone wants to. Stock is up 73% in year; so most don’t feel the need to. Either they are happy where they are. Or they move to a role where they get better challenge or more exciting work.
There is only one way in consulting. There are plenty of ways in big tech. Someone from Google can confirm or deny, but that has been my experience at big tech. It’s definitely a mindset change. But again, no one will stop you from going up…just know that exec promotions at big tech requires significantly more effort than a partner at consulting. But you don’t have an option to stay at level and not pursue partnership at consulting . In big tech, nobody will force you to chase one track or get out

OP has no clue about the world outside consulting.
P.S. comp grows because Google stock has quintupled in the last 10 years.
What explains everyone being in the same role for 5+ years or even more at any corporation?
You have a very naive and idealistic view of the world and Google. Google is just a corporation with fancy benefits. Nothing more.
Tech just being a corporate job means progressions are much slower and random. Google is notoriously so if you do some research you’ll find out.
The past 20 years have been really the prime time for tech so staying at a level without pushing too hard to rise up worked but with AI I think these golden days are gone. I’ve seen very senior people got let go during layoffs and hard for them to find roles elsewhere for 1) they are too expensive (eg making 400K+) and 2) they are the mid level with tons of experience but lack top title and P& L experiences.

I came from consulting to tech. Consulting has fast track promos and career advancement. Google does not. My total comp @ GOOG far and away outweighs my TC in consulting.

A few corrections:
- Despite my org placement, I’m actually in a non tech role.
- My total comp actually grew by 167%.
- I actually travel more now @ G than I did previously.
What roles are they? Most people don’t seem to be in roles that long unless technical imo.
OP - what was your interview process like?
