Got a offer for 98K. I’m in Texas but will need to relocate to ATL or Chicago. I’m partial to Atl just because it’s in the south but curious to try the Midwest. Pro v cons ?

Having lived in both, it depends on what you’re looking for. Atlanta has better weather, the cost of living is lower, and there’s easier access to nature. The downside is that it’s still a fairly regional hub so it’s not as big and the amount of things to do pale in comparison to Chicago. Atlanta is also very “sprawly”, you’re going to need a car to get anywhere, unlike Chicago where you can get by without one.

Chicago is your quintessential big American city, with the upsides and downsides associated with that (lots of unique stuff to do, high cost of living, trash weather etc)

likehelpful

^^this is the most accurate answer

like

Chicago

Very affordable
Better Restaurant and bar scene
Bigger city life if you’re looking for that
Great public transportation

like

Cost of living is much cheaper, greener, as is the chill quality of life with many cities to choose from within the metro
Chicago is more dense, violent, expensive and corrupt
I would pick Atlanta or Dallas where $$$ go much further

likefunny

Lol if you’re a consultant you’re not living in Englewood that’s for sure.

Atlanta has better weather but Chicago has a better network and opportunities both in client base and exit opportunities. Additionally, long-term wise, Chicago has better suburbs to raise a family if you see that in your future. Playing Devils advocate though, Atlanta is cheaper and has lower taxes.

likefunny

While the suburbs might be somewhat better in Chicago (again, depending on what you compare), I’d recommend exploring real estate market. If OP has any plans to buy property, Chicagoland is definitely not the best option.

What is wrong with the South?
Atlanta really does not feel like you are in the South... most everybody is from out of State here.

like

Isn’t OP saying that (s)he is inclined TOWARDS Atlanta since it’s in the South?

like

Don't come to Atlanta, we full.

Yeah, don’t add to the traffic... though lately it has been really good... someone said Covid-19?

98k for chicago is plenty, you will get more bang for your buck in Atlanta but you really can’t compare the two, Chicago has so much more to offer. If your into nightlife, scenery, views, Chicago is the place.

likefunny

Chicago is nice and I really like it, but real estate market (in suburbs since have kids) kills all my desire to stay here. Property taxes rise every year, property value declines, stagnant market where you basically rent your house from the state. If you want to buy decent we’ll-sized house in a nice neighborhood be ready to pay 20-30k in taxes, plus mortgage, mortgage insurance, maintenance expenses, etc. plus live with the fact that you will be stuck here because if you buy, it will be very hard to sell (I’m talking about selling even for less than what you’ll pay for it).

Out of curiosity, what's your YOE?

like

I live in atlanta but also lived in chicago for 10 years. I love atlanta, much safer than a majority of chicago (of course, both cities have their unsafe parts). I love the weather in atlanta and all the different companies here. Atlanta is 3rd in the country, with fortune 500 headquarters, so plenty of a professional network.

like

98 a year puts you far away from any safety issues in Chicago.

likefunny

Atlanta. No contest.

like

If you’re from the South, I don’t recommend the Midwest. That weather is insanely bad during the winter.

Also, if you’re into nature/being outside at all, Atlanta is significantly better than Chicago. Not many trails or outdoor opportunities in the Chicago area. The Appalachian Trail is 2 hours from Atlanta!

like

What are you currently making?

Both cities are pretty nice. I love Chicago tho.

Winter

Chicago can get really cold. Great city though

If you go for interview and you sort of know that the person interviewing you might be curious about something on your negative on your resume like why is there a gap or why were you in XX role for so long?

Do you address it pre-emptively? Or does that show insecurity and you leave the elephant in the room and wait till they ask you?

I guess this is more in the case of networking than interview like do you make your own story?
