Design for fun is called art. Graphic design is for clients and consumers and is not meant to be fun.
Art is not design for fun. And design isn't art.
But it is used to be a cool job. WIth every tech that makes it easier for the common dummy to sling acceptable design assets designers make a step further into corporatism bs to try to create value for what we do and separate us from the "client nephew with Canva"
In the process we lose the magic that makes people to buy what we do.
I think at this point dog we're just trying to survive
Never has been.
…. my feedback was “have FUN with it.”
I think the same thing when using a dodgy website to “score” email subject lines. Want a higher score? Add the word “now” or “today” in the first half of the line. Yay mom, I got 100 points 🥲
Corporate design work will probably never be fun again (if it ever was). Do the fun stuff for yourself.
Design is about making money. Its only fun when the business you serve is doing well financially.
Read all these comments. Bunch of sad sacks here. We had fun and did some very innovative work eh, guessing 90% of the time. How? Learned how to win at Capitalist Client Chess Game.
You people who caved-in, soured on the biz, or, were just too lazy to fight for good work - deserved what you got. Pathetic.
We had a blast, and are still having a blast. Oh, one little thing. Gotta be willing to fire those cheap, sleazy, myopic, or just crummy clients. That, is energizing.
So you're deciding what is, or is not fun for other people?
40 years in the Biz, roughly 30 years as a CD on top Fortune 500 accounts. Very, very seldom bent to the "creative killers."
Learned tactics on beating them at their capitalist game. Jedi mind trick also involved.
Have sooo many stories. Keeping it fun, used to take my entire group out to Oak Street beach in Chicago for hours - to develop Kraft storyboards. (All were done the night before.) Minor sunburn, pizza overload, and smallest swimsuit contest, enjoyed by all. Had more fun than the MAD MEN. The list goes on and on. So, if we can do it, then you can do it. Gotta try though.
