Sometimes the references might take a while to come back but also they could just be collecting them incase you are successful. Hard to tell.

Especially if there is only one person calling to check on them and have Multiple applications to go through.
Hmm sometimes, but not always. I have had both situations so I don't want to give you any false hope. Hopefully it means they are thinking about making you an offer though. Best of luck to you.
Yeah I’ve had both too, but wasn’t sure what was more common!
Usually references come late in the process. Nobody is going to spend time calling around and asking about someone unless they're in serious contention. However, they may have just asked about them to have them ready.
Yeah maybe you’re right! I know it’s not that common for them to ask upfront!

It could be that there are several candidates they are checking references for. Perhaps they’re down to the last few and they want to check each reference for each candidate to narrow down the decision for them

I would just have some patience. Asking for references might indicate they are interested. It’s a process and can take awhile to get through. Trust it and see what happens. Make sure you’re still applying for other jobs.

Asking for references is a good sign, but it doesn’t always mean an offer is imminent. It usually means they’re seriously considering you, but timelines can vary depending on internal processes. A polite follow-up after a week is totally fine.
