Yep. I have both been the person getting this type of promotion and the person giving this type of promotion. In both instances, it worked out well for the company. A good manager who cares about their team and has good commercial awareness will be able to recognise when it’s the right thing to do.
I don’t believe in waiting until someone is working at a level to promote them, if you can see the right potential in them. Wait too long and they’ll just go elsewhere. Assume all employees of a similar level know each others salaries, are hyper aware of the number of months their peers have spent in a role, and share detailed information with each other about their pay rise/promotion discussions.
If they are not performing at their current level then that’s a different story!
This is great context! I ask the question because I was told “you typically work above your level for a while until you earn that promo” for my own promotion and then am hearing the exact opposite of that at the same company for the two levels I mentioned. 😂
I am a new manager so trying to understand the ins and outs of this and also how they approach it at my company, especially since I’m hearing conflicting things…
Yes, at my company they all start as post grad interns on the same day and then get promoted 6 months in together. After that it’s up to them
I’ve never heard of that but I think that’s actually very great
