Implementations makes it sound like you’re in tech.
If it were me, and I had the choice, I would stay a w2.
You can always get a contracting job as a side gig if you want. But those benefits are going to be unmatched compared to what you’d find in the market

You can do W2 contracting, keep benefits, insurance, 401k, etc, likely no PTO/sick, but the rest is the the normal package. Pay is higher, security is lower, downtime between contracts likely, offboarding is a risk unless you're higher skilled/desired by clients.
Money can be better and you work when and how you want.
Cons include 1099 taxes are higher and it’s much harder at first to sell.

Close friend did it. Salary doubled. They also said if he does well they'll extend the contract. Ended up becoming full-time after a year.
High risk. Sure you get double the hourly pay but if you only get ten hours of contract work you’re in a bad position
My friend did this exact thing
the best way to do this is if your spouse has FT benefits that will cover you

You can request benefits in a contract too like health insurance, dental etc.
