No problem saying you need more now that you understand the scope of responsibilities the role will require
Yes. The first time I tried it, it worked. So of course when I tried it a few other times I was surprised how poorly it was received
Yes. Know the job and assess how much you think it's worth. In NYC they aren't allowed to ask what you make. I usually say my starting range is xx - xx. But i need to assess the role once i know more. If you think they're orffer is fair then take it. But you should always try to negotiate you a bit when they first offer. But don't be too bullish unless you think it's worth more.weigh pros and cons.
Poorly in the sense that? Did they rescind their offer? How much more did you ask for?
I did this a few times but it was only because I was interviewing for something in a different market than I started interviewing in or lived in currently. I've received increases when I asked but they have sometimes still ended low because the cost of living was so much higher in the new cities. If you're in a different city and they catch you off guard before you've researched cost of living it's fair to be honest and say that. All of that being said, unless you're in non profit, you never have to legally disclose your salary. So don't.
Yes but I had a counter offer
Yes. Once when I got a counter offer from my current employer (it wasn’t a big raise, just below the counter offer bc there were other benefits involved). And once when the hiring manager was a friend and thought my range was too low
I’m in the middle of asking more than I ballparked initially once I did the hard math on going from Boston to SF/Bay Area cost of living. To be honest I felt bad asking to revisit the salary topic until I found this thread. I’ll report back on the outcome.
