Has anyone ever regretted staying too long in a role? spoke with a friend who stayed in the same position for nearly a decade because the pay was ok, the team was ok, and the work was comfortable. Looking back, they wondered whether they had missed opportunities to grow. It got me thinking, how do you know when you’re building valuable experience versus becoming too comfortable? For those who have made a move after many years, what finally pushed you to leave?

I stayed at my first firm for 9 years due to a great partner mentor who had great clients. Everything else about the firm (hours, pay, culture etc) screamed for me to leave. After having a child in the heart to the pandemic, I knew I deserved more. I lateralled to a firm that was more family friendly. I did regret not doing it sooner but I try to keep my focus forward facing as there is nothing I can do to change the past. Each year I take a hard look at where I am and whether I still feel I have the opportunities for growth. If im stagnating, I start popping my head up for new opportunities

Thanks for sharing

I know I’ve stayed too long and now feel like I can’t get a job anywhere else. Other jobs similar to mine want experience that I don’t have currently.

Overall just under 7 (2+ as admin and 4+ as paralegal)

I stayed too long. But still ended up moving in-house. It was the right job for that season of my life. So I regret the pay I left on the table, but I also had the flexibility I needed. I was very comfortable with the work and my team too so it wasn’t awful.

Do you share details about raises/bonuses/other financial gains with friends or do you keep it to yourself? Is anyone concerned the push for sexual equality in pay without accordant leveling of parental leave is gonna backfire?

Here’s a hypothetical:

A company has 2 candidates, aged 25-30, equal in every respect save one’s a man the other’s a woman. Maybe the woman is a slightly better candidate overall. They’d have equal comp.

Company considers the woman a riskier bet due to possibility she’ll take maternity leave — and considers the man less risky for his ineligibility to take as much leave. 🤷

Hi, been stuck in the contract analysis/review cycle. I have asked a few recruiters how to make a lateral move into in-house. They told me to focus on contract management, which I have been doing for the past year. Now that I have, are there any sites besides “jobscan” that I can use to make sure my resume fits the job descriptions? Does anybody know any recruiters that could help me, as well?

Anyone hear of a patent attorney going to an investment bank, hedge fund, or venture capital firm?? Considering a change. Thought I could use my skills to help investors analyze and valuate companies.

Next week I’m having my first lateral interview as a junior associate. I’m very nervous because the group with whom I’m interviewing works with life science/tech clients and the attorneys have strong science/tech backgrounds; and I do not. However, I am very, very interested in transitioning to this practice. And I reaaally want this job because it’s at my dream firm. How would you recommend preparing for the lateral interview?

Assuming that I'm okay with a salary of 70K and more, and that I really don't want to work at a law firm. Is it going to be difficult for me to return to law with two years of experience and one year working in a legal adjacent role.
