☝🏾this is not right. This is absolutely terrible.
I think my biggest problem with it is that it’s contingent on you having the bandwidth to do the assignment on top of your current job. Someone less qualified but with more free time may do a better job on an assignment
Yes it’s a thing, and I wouldn’t do it...I’d charge them a free lance rate.
I’m in the middle of two interviews - one a VP level and the other a Director level, and both have asked me to complete assignments. The first company asked me to do a content audit and the second wanted me to put together a pitch for a hypothetical client. Both assignments came after I’d already interviewed with 6+ different people over the course of two months. It’s bananas.
I've known people who've had 'test' assignments like this, but I think it's disrespectful for anyone over a junior level. I would expect to judge an AD on their portfolio and soft skills.
Unless you’re really desperate, walk away. I have before and never regretted it.
The baller thing to do would be to write back saying "what were you thinking for a day rate, and who would I send a bill to over there?"
But in this job market...
It’s a thing now. I get so turned off every time I hear it, no matter how the interview has been going. “This is why I built a portfolio.”
I agree with VP 2 . If it takes over an hour I always give them my freelance rate. I don't have the time to be doing free work on top of my fulltime job.
It's should be a 2 way street with hiring. If they want me to do an assignment to evaluate me, great, I have an assignment to give them to evaluate the team then
I would do exactly what BBDO, Freelancer, senior copy writer 2 said to do. We can’t be out here commoditizing ourselves. Agencies hate it when pitch brands do it to them and they should understand asking a potential candidate to do spec work is the same thing. The industry is upside down. That Canadian shop ZuloAlphaKilo (sp) did a video about this topic. You go and buy coffee and won’t pay for it because it didn’t meet your expectations...sure that will fly. This needs to stop across the industry
Yeah it happened to me. After several interviews the last bit was a brief. Was annoying, but I got the job.
Yes it’s a thing
On top of the day rate advice, I’d ask them to sign a contract saying the work belongs solely to you
@senior copywriter 2 - no, draft a contract with your rates, stipulation of content and ideation ownership, so it can’t be used anywhere without your consent. Then send them the bill once the assignment is completed.
If you want to work there, crush it.
Way too many people with work they didn’t really drive in their books getting way too far in this industry is why this exists now
Definitely an in person thing for engineers, I’ve had to present a solution deck to an app brief before. Airport guide app.
It’s dangerous. If they (the agency) winds up using a campaign near to what you presented (and didn’t hire you) there’s liability on their end. I hope it was just a “hypothetical” brief
Invoice them after?
Had to do one for my current gig. Only went through with it because a mutual contact who introduced me said to trust them and that it was a formality. Still sucked. I've since convinced them to stop.
I've agreed to do it and charged a day rate.
