Hello Gang, I’m on the business side for Walmart right now. Walmart Global Tech recently offered me a role to move to the San Bruno office, but I’d be taking a demotion from L6 to E5. YOE: 8, COMP(200k base, 25% bonus, 100k RSU). Is this competitive in the bay? I have Doordash and Instacart in the pipeline, but no final offers yet.

Coach
sounds like you want to work at an editorial company not a production company.
have you reached out to anyone at any editorial houses? i would recommend you speak to editors and eps and also see if you can meet junior editors, assistant editors they would be good to network with.
fwiw company 3 isn’t editorial.
let me know where you are located and i’ll send you a list of companies.

It’s super hard to break in straight to editor at one of the top houses. I’ve spent 8 years at one of these companies and know most of the others. From what I’ve seen, Post houses tend to promote their assistant editors unless you are bringing clients/clout/connections with you. We get lots of editors contacting us who want to staff up but not a lot of guarantee they will make any money for the company. Most places are always looking for senior assistants so that is likely the best way to break in if you don’t yet have a way to exhibit your potential value to a company. Plus the senior assistants often work with lead editors who kick down the opportunity to edit cutdowns for the best spots that you can add to a reel, so it can be worth it if you are building still!
Create the opportunity for yourself!
I implement this practice regularly. Here’s how I do it:
1. Create a stunning portfolio of work.
2. Make sure the content is the type the agency likes best. Pick Items that echo what they have in their book now if you have them.
3. Connect with decision makers of the agency at networking events online and IRL.
4. Connect with them on LinkedIn with a personal message.
5. Let them know what you’re looking for! Ask for referrals or inquire about a collaborating on a project together.
6. If all else fails see if you can volunteer to work with them short term (a day or 3). If they say yes you can wow them and get your foot in the door.
These are all ways I’ve personally gotten opportunities of all kinds. You can take the framework and adjust to how it works best for you. Hope this helps!
