Has anyone here tried their hand at freelancing? I got laid off last week and just have a feeling it's going to take forever before I find a new job. I can't survive on unemployment with my two kids and really need to figure out a way to use my sales skills to make some more money. Could you share some ideas so I can start extending my search or attempts in different directions? Thanks for the help in advance!

I have a couple freelance gigs I landed on Upwork. They both pay really well and have given me flexibility and extra cash. It is definitely something worth looking into.

One idea that worked for me is reaching out to small businesses or startups that need sales help but can’t hire full-time; you can offer flexible contract work, cold outreach, or even lead generation. Also, check out platforms like Upwork or LinkedIn for freelance sales gigs, and tap your network for referrals. Sometimes, a casual chat leads to your next project. Hang in there; you’ve got skills that are always in demand!

I have a background in journalism, so I've done some freelance writing. But I'm not really sure what freelancing in sales would look like. I can't even picture it in my mind, lol. Do you have any other skills to fall back on? When my husband was laid off, he did some auto detailing to make extra money.

Potentially look into consulting work, maybe startups that need help. Freelancing can be some trial and error. Start and learn your way through, and make sure you are keeping detailed records of your work and the money you are bringing in.

Upwork or Bravado, I've never actually seen any other fractional role that wasn't a scam.

Honestly, if push comes to shove, property managers LOVE bringing on part-time and full-time leasing agents. The job is pretty laid-back and you'd have plenty of time to fire off applications...

I had a job interview for a role that I really want. The hiring manager scheduled me for an interview and did not show up. Emailed me an hour later stating that he got super busy and couldn’t attend, and would like to reschedule. This is a major red flag, but I can’t help but feel that I am missing out since this role pays 50% over what I currently make. Should I let the recruiter know? What’s your take on this?

I left my job about a year ago to relocate, make sure it was the right decision and start a side business in the mean time. Now I’m actively looking for a new sales position, have tons of experience, but am struggling to even get a response from job apps. I am wondering if this is because of my employment gap? I don’t have my side business listed on my resume because I don’t feel like I have enough positive “stats” to report yet given it’s new. Any advice or recommendations?
