Has anyone in this bowl had a successful case interview after prep and can report back?

Am I crazy wanting to quit with nothing lined up? I really wanted a long mental break between jobs. So I’m thinking quitting, relaxing, and then job search. But I’ve been told it’s very difficult to job search while unemployed. Is it really a red flag to recruiter and hiring managers?

I currently work at a large research institution and am in the process of getting retroactively reclassified to a new title (Long story but my PI is cheap and routinely pays ppl the bare minimum so now the Union is helping me w/ a retro reclass.) Reclass can take 2 - 6 months to process. Meanwhile, I am interviewing for industry job. If I get an industry job, what do I do if my reclass isn’t processed yet? I want the title and the money owed which may be about $15000- 20000.

Can you take notes on a laptop during a case interview? This sound silly but my handwriting is egregious. At speed, it’s almost illegible and leads to clutter thoughts. I’m a fast typer and was wondering if this would be allowed. Would still draw my structure out on paper
