I’m transitioning from the military (CBRN and Combat Engineer) into cybersecurity. I completed a cybersecurity boot camp and I’ll be taking the Security+ exam soon. I haven’t had any interviews and I’ve received a fair amount of rejections emails. Could anyone give me some tips and possibly tell me how to improve my resume?

Banks, especially Goldman Sachs, have big military recruitment programs and give a lot of preference to it. Chase is hiring more in Cyber than Citi or GS, and Wells Fargo is hiring a lot across everything depending on region. If you haven’t tried them I’d check them out. I can provide more guidance if you pick one or all.

Yeah, I mean, just google their names and military recruitment. They each have specialized funnel programs for it. And they give more points than even Federal require for it so.

GS is very driven, 5 days in, and a bit cutthroat but also very rewarding and lot of great people. Good money. Best insurance. Titling is bad. 4th for regulatory issues.

JPMC is my favorite this far for long term; I enjoyed GS work more, but JPMC has best mix of culture, work, and stuff IMO. 3 days in. Okay money. Fair insurance. Biggest, so opportunity to move around more. Titling is mediocre. 3rd for regulatory issues.

Citi is cheapest amongst them. More red tape, but also pretty chill like JPMC. 3 days in. Money is better. Titling is better. Opportunity to move around. Insurance is mediocre. They’ve had some regulatory issues; 2nd in the bunch.

Wells Fargo, I only know they’re paying high right now; culture not so hot from my experience. Otherwise I have limited insights. Titling is good. Insurance don’t know. They’ve had a lot of regulatory issues; most of the bunch.

First things first, I would switch to a more conventional resume layout (one page, headers with bullet points, “top-down” chronological order, etc.)

You also don’t have a bachelors degree, which isn’t absolutely necessary, but will make you more competitive. If you like certifications, look into completing WGU’s degree program.

Look into hiring initiatives for veterans. Your best options will be federal government (esp. if cleared), contractors, and private sector orgs with a defined transition program. Are you eligible for SkillBridge?

like

Not elegible for skill bridge yet

Transitioned a year and a half ago, you’ll want to switch the the Wharton format just to eliminate ATS issues (which may be why you’re getting rejections).

Your military experience is too “army” nobody will know what that stuff means. Some of the verbiage needs to be tweaked.

Your security experience can be improved with more focus on impact. You have numbers which is fine, but 40 routers to a F500 company is like half of one floor and not necessarily impactful.

Skills section is a good chance to hit the job reqs for ATS and tailor for each application - so for a risk management job you can have more risk-focused skills etc

Thank you for the feed back. It’s all volunteers work for local businesses in my county, I’m not really sure how to jazz that up more.

Bro, check out fiverr for cyber resume fixing. It’s pretty affordable. Overall, I think you need some more metrics in your resume, change the format.

You should also consider NSA. They hire a lot and are actively recruiting. Military might more directly transfer there.

Also big cities, police departments, and universities / state governments. I know so many people in state IT in TX that are dunces but make fair money. It’s a great place to get paid while you go to school, get a degree / experience, and they can’t be picky since they can’t compete with the market. Might be easier for someone soft on experience or education.

Happy to help. Best of luck. If you need anything else just message me.

I transitioned out in 2019 doing digital forensics I was hired on my Deloitte 6 months out. Without experience it’s going to be tough. Deloitte is extremely military friendly when it comes to hiring veterans. Have you looked into hire our heroes or those other programs offered by SFL-TAP? Alot of my buddies picked up gigs on their way out with those programs with little experience.

Considering a Product Owner role. Any best practices of what questions to ask during an interview? First phase deals with a virtual Teams interview with the recruiter and her manager on Tuesday. Excited since this is a hop from a Product Analyst role and entails an offer of over $30,000 from what I'm getting now! This would be a permanent full-time compared to my current contractor role that ends in March.

Scenario: US visa expired in 2021. Applied for a Canadian tourist visa to hopefully go for H-1B stamping in Canada once they open appointments.
Biometrics completed. Haven’t received any comm regarding my tourist visa approval. My partner already revived the visa long ago even if we allied together. Could it be because my US visa has expired? The reason I gave for applying for visitor visa was just for tourism purposes.
