I know a teacher that used the Michael Brown shooting in Ferguson, MO as the basis of his unit on "Antigone", including wearing a BLM t-shirt while doing so. That shooting was in 2014, but the "lesson" was just a year ago.
There's just Truth in my book.
Opinions will vary.
I like to incorporate national issues into lessons. Students care more than you think they do. They have great comments and questions, and I enjoy trying to help them make sense out of a seemingly senseless world. We have great discussions.
I chose not to have my freshmen read "To Kill a Mockingbird" last year or this year because I was concerned about parental ignorance of the true message of the book.
That’s awful. But I completely understand.
I had pushback on Beloved. A bus driver said it would “make white people feel bad.” Another parent refused to let his son (in an AP college level course) read it. He said it was violent and homoerotic. There is no homoerotica in it any where. But Catch-22 was ok, despite being more violent and graphic. 🙄
Yes. I believe that to become better individuals and members of society someday, students must also be aware of the current political status of the state. It's also part of learning.
