Is it misleading to just look at Total Compensation from a $ dollar value/ Total Compensation seems to be much more subjective than base salary in terms of its value. Some factors might be:

RSUs granted on dollar value or by # of shares & stock price trends
Vesting schedule
strike price on ISOs & delta between strike price and real market value

For instance, most of value in Amazon's comp seems to be granted in years 3 & 4, but it's well known that most people last only 2 years max there.

So, I just fired my first employee as a manager and I'm heartbroken. He was a great, great person but after 6 months on a PIP he just wasn't cutting it skills-wise. It’s always the same; base salary, bonus, benefits etc. At the end of the day, all these “opportunities” are still At-Will JOBS. Has anyone had any experience and success in negotiating a contract, LTI, or equity? If so, thoughts on strategy in broaching the subject during the interview/hiring process would be appreciated. At-will past a certain age/experience level ain’t an “opportunity”.
