Have any of you made a career transition post baby? I’m a senior manager, about to start my 3rd trimester for Baby no.1 and know my current career isn’t sustainable for me with a baby. My plan is to go through my full paid leave and take additional unpaid leave. As a tech implementation consultant, the travel, stress, and time commitments aren’t realistic for me and curious to learn from other women who have been in my shoes. Any and all advice appreciated!!

Yes! I knew consulting wasn’t for me long term, and when I had my first baby and returned to work after 4 months, I knew the situation wasn’t sustainable. The company just didn’t seem to care or acknowledge that my life had completely changed - there was no support, no adjustments, no accommodations, and mind you- this was during a global pandemic ..just a really really tough time all around.
I ended up going on short term disability for anxiety 2 months after returning from leave. I used the time off to find a new job.
I started in industry when baby #1 was 8 months old. I THRIVED! I was promoted twice in 2.5 years, once at 9 months pregnant. I had my second baby and am on track for my next promo.
There truly is a better world outside of consulting. One with true WLB. One in which you can have a baby and go to work, and focus on what’s truly important.

That’s so awesome to hear and congrats on your success!!! Consulting leaders are mostly men or women with no kids so I think they have a hard time recognizing women with kids need more flexibility. The consulting industry is always work until the work is done so that also impacts women with kids.

Take ALL the time off you can with your baby - paid or not given you can squeeze it financially. Your firm’s work will go on without you… coming from a consulting mom who did NOT take this advice and so badly wish I could.

Like another commenter mentioned, the grass is greener somewhere else. You may have to wait a while to find it, but it will come.

8.5 months is amazing. You will have plenty of time to think. You never know what life will be like for you postpartum, but I always started feeling more like myself when baby was 3-4 months old.

Another one who left consulting after having my first. I took my 5 months paid leave, came back to a mostly local job and used some time to look, and landed a mostly remote job in industry. Since then, I’ve gotten promoted while 6 months pregnant with my second, had my baby, and am headed back after my second maternity leave. Because of the limited travel, I’m feeling a lot less stressed about the transition this time around.

like

Congrats!! And thanks for sharing your transition story, it definitely helps me feel like I can find career success post baby!

I didn’t after baby #1 but I’m stronnggly considering it for baby #2 - currently pregnant and hoping to remain employed at least through maternity leave, and hoping to be able to study for a new entirely different certification while on leave.

I have an offer and want to negotiate

1. London base salary but I have to absorb all the expenses (train + stay)
I am thinking to negotiate to

2. home base salary and have my expenses paid for

I know that's depends on the amount I have to travel (and potentially stay) but at the moment this is unknown. Past 8 months was just twice a month + 2 nights stay.

The only thing I know is it won't be every week, the return trian ticket is about £80-100, depends I could plan ahead.

I’ve been a paralegal for about 30 years in private law firmS. As I get older, I feel like it’s time for a semi-career change. Either an office manager position or perhaps a corporate position where I can travel a little since my kids are grown and I’m an empty-nester. Has anyone made this type of transition? Advise welcome. Last week I had to explain to my child what “politics” (as in office politics) is. My child is going to a new high school and wants to play volleyball. There was a 3 day open “tryout” for incoming freshman for 2 teams. After the first day, she noticed that
1) there were obvious favorites (coaches are not even hiding that fact);
2) some can’t even play and got on the team,
3) some that can obviously play but did not get on the team;
4) decision were obviously made before the first day was over.

How many firms is too many? I’ve practiced 13 years. Since I was a 1st year associate, every 3 years or so I’ve been recruited for another opportunity that is hard to pass up. I’ve been at my current firm 3 years and got the call again, again about an opportunity that is hard to pass up. I don’t like having a reputation of a flight risk, but this keeps happening. Should I decline to pursue the opportunity just so I have a longer track record at my current firm? This will be my 4th if I move.
